Pub (San Miguel de Allende, GTO, MX)
In April 2007 we did an unplanned five day escape to central Mexico. We bought our tickets around noon, got home from work and packed, booked a hotel and were on a redeye flight within a few hours. Our destination was the picturesque 400 year old city of Guanajuato, in central Mexico. We did not expect to do much pub crawling. But we stumbled onto some nice bars worthy of mention.
I say "bars" because Mexico is not quite known for its pubs, or even having what most of us might call a pub culture at all. I suspect many people have a stereotypical view of Mexico's cantinas -- old bars with swinging doors. In fact in my travels to Mexico so far, I've found that it hosts a lively, modern bar, club and disco culture. On this trip we did find one actual pub, and several nice bars and clubs. In fact, we walked past many more nice clubs and bars than we could find time for. With a variety of live & recorded music, and hopping college and youth culture Guanajuato is an excellent place to go bar hopping.
Mexican beer primer
Two main companies in Mexico are responsible for these
beers. I'm sure there are more, but here's most of what you'll find in Mexico:
Corona -- a light lager beer, and a big selling Mexican beer abroad. Despite its reputation in the US as Mexico's standard, commercial cheap beer import, I find it tastier than all mainstream American beers (Budweiser, Miller, etc)
Negra Modelo -- a dark beer. It is smooth and described as a "Vienna-Munich" type beer by the brewer. This is one of my favorite Mexican beers, and is widely available.
Modelo Especia -- a lager beer (described as a Pilsner lager by the brewer) with a slightly richer taste than Corona.
Victoria -- described as Pilsner-Vienna type beer
by the brewer, and is a cross between a light lager and a dark beer. I had
my first Victoria on this trip, and it is now one of my favorite Mexican
beers.
Sol -- Similar to Corona; described as a light, tasty lager beer. I don't think I've ever tried it.
Tecate -- a lager beer, light, but richer than Sol. I don't order this in Mexico unless I can't find Negra Modelo, Victoria, Bohemia or Corona, pretty much in that order.
XX "Dos Equis" (Spanish for "Two X's") -- a light lager beer. I don't much care for it.
Bohemia -- similar to Modelo Especial. It is a light, rich lager beer. I like it. Not a bad choice if my other favorites are not to be found.
Noche Buena -- a dark, rich beer which I think is only sold during the Christmas season. I've never tried it.
