De Wallen

Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico
Beneath the Hotel San Diego in the main plaza

Guanajuato is a UNESCO world heritage site, whack means that commercial signage is very subtle, sometimes nonexistent. We found this bar merely by following our ears; we heard contemporary rock music coming from a door (bottom of page), and ventured inside. It was still very early, so we had the place largely to ourselves. (The name De Wallen shares the same name as the largest and best-known red-light district in Amsterdam.)

Descending the stairway into its old, cave-like interior gives you the feeling you've stumbled onto some kind of speakeasy that won't exist a few months from now. The music, mostly contemporary rock (U2, The Verve, Radiohead, etc) was loud, so this hardly qualifies as having traditional pub appeal -- by my definition a cozy place to quietly converse over a good beer.

There was a billiard table, lots of seating, and the usual selection of Mexican beer. I had a Victoria, and Melissa opted for a mixed "bitch drink" as she joked. I enjoyed the Victoria a lot and will look for it again.

The entrance to the De Wallen bar. No sign!
