In March 2007 Melissa and I spent three weeks in Germany, and a few days in Amsterdam. We rented a loft apartment in Berlin for ten of those days. The remainder of our time, if not day-tripping to Dresden or Spandau, was spent in Bremen, and driving along the northern Baltic Sea coast of Germany with a German friend. A lot of hoopla is often made of German beer and sausage. So when in Germany, make sure to delve into both at some point.
It seemed to us that the measure of a good German pub (in Berlin at least
-- where so much is new or rebuilt) was less about the age and physical
character of the place, and more about atmosphere, clientle and beer quality.
Maybe on our next trip we'll find exceptions. We were a bit distracted from
proper pub crawling by other interests on this trip.
