What's there not to like about an English pub in Canada that boasts that it takes 119.5 seconds to pour the perfect pint of Guinness? We happened in at a slow hour of the day, so I got good interior photos. (scroll down for more). We stumbled onto to the Penny after a wonderful high tea experience down the street.

This pub had ample nooks and crannies you could crawl into and relax, sip a pint, play darts and converse. They had about two dozen varieties of beer, and a number of ciders and wines.

A pub of obviously of new vintage, it falls under my "imitation old pub" classification. They've manufactured the pub's character, but they did a good job. I wouldn't pass up a 200 year old pub to go to the Penny Farthing, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at it either. Genuine old pubs are virtually non-existent on the west coast of the USA. Even modern places like the Penny are hard to find, so I'm often a sucker for these modern, commercialized pubs.

About Victoria: it is the capital of British Columbia, located on Vancouver Island. About 150 years ago it was a British Colonial outpost, so you can bet your British Pound it has a few old pubs, and plenty like this one. Just go to Bastion Square in Victoria, and you'll find a number of nice pubs right there (not this one -- this one was north of town center). But if you're serious about pub crawling on Vancouver Island and Victoria, here' s a list of Vancouver Island pubs:
